Pacific women address food security and toxic chemicals

The Pacific Regional Preparatory Meeting for the Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States was held from 10-12 July 2013, Denarau Island, Nadi, Fiji.  It was the second of three regional SIDS preparatory meetings for the Third International Conference on SIDS in 2014.

The Major Women’s Group: Creating a Just and Sustainable Future gave a presentation which covered key issues of food security and toxic chemicals.

– over-use of pesticides and availability of alternatives or alternative practices;

– impacts of toxic substances including methlymercury in fish and the need to reduce emissions of mercury at source;

– impacts of poor waste management, especially e-waste; and

– emerging issues such as EDCs and deepsea minerals mining and its impact on the environment and the food web.
