Community Engagement Process

It is often difficult to assess the adequacy of a community engagement process prior to getting involved in it, but there are some key things to look out for.

All community engagement processes require:

  • commitment from all parties
  • clear principles to guide the process
  • a protocol on which to measure both the commitment and the effectiveness of the process
  • a comprehensive plan of action

The principles and protocols listed here are adapted from the NICNAS Community Engagement Charter . The Charter was written by members of the National Toxics Network and the National Industrial Chemical Notification and Assessment Scheme’s Community Engagement Forum.
